Below you will find selected publications and notices about projects we have undertaken. Many of these involve financial modeling or simulations using the proprietary FOCUS economic software for microgrids.
Natural Plants as Solar Farms to Produce Electricity
The photosynthesis that takes place in the leaves of
fast growing plants like Paulownia and Jatropha
convert the suns radiant energy into biomass, which
can then be converted into electricity. In this fashion
they act just like ‘natural’ solar panels. Today’s
silicon solar panels are about 20-22% efficient at
converting sunlight to electricity. It appears that
Paulownia plants rival this efficiency, but also
produce STORABLE fuel in the process – a much more
valuable resource.
The Use of Graphene Batteries in Electric Aircraft
While the thought of using electric batteries to power aircraft is nothing new, advances in energy
density using light-weight graphene batteries are now achievable. This paper studies the state of
the art for electric flight and the role that graphene batteries being developed by MEP World Group of Florida may play in it.
Flow Batteries to Lithium-Ion for Arbitrage
Flow-type batteries have a lower ’round trip’ efficiency, while Li-Ion chemistry requires ‘Augmentation’, or periodic replacement of a percentage of its cells every few years. Which is more cost effective? We use FOCUS to determine which type of system makes more money when the task is to ‘Arbitrage’ – to buy kilowatt-hours at low settlement prices and sell them when the prices are higher.
